You Have 4 Goals to Achieve!

Media & Presentation Skills Training Helps In the Four Jobs you've Got To Do!
Anytime you speak, whether to the Media or Audiences, you have four specific and distinct goals to accomplish.
#1. People have to UNDERSTAND what you are saying.
This sounds like a simple task, and in fact, most people do speak in a way that is understandable, as long as they don't use too much jargon or speak in a manner that is difficult to understand.
#2. Your audience needs to REMEMBER what you said.
Now this gets to the tricky part. How many times have you sat through a conference filled with speaker after speaker for one or two days, but when it was all over, you couldn't associate any one specific new idea with any speaker? There is a big difference in speaking in a way that is understandable versus speaking in a way that is both understandable and memorable.
#3. Your audience must ACT on what you've asked them to do.
Unless you are a college professor or a humorist, when you speak you are trying to motivate people to actually DO something, i.e., sign a contract, work harder and inspiring employees to achieve more etc
#4. Your audience should TELL OTHERS what you said.
The real power in speaking is not just reaching the audience in the room or watching any one show. The strength comes from getting people who heard you to go to work for you at no cost by telling other people what you said. Think of it as multi-level marketing without the cheese and sleaze.
Most speakers accomplish only the first task when they are speaking. Yes, the audience understood them, but that's it. The speaker was either so abstract or boring that nobody remembers anything said. Since nobody remembered anything, they sure didn't act on whatever it was the speaker wanted them to do and they sure as heck didn't tell other people anything about the speaker's message other than that it was great for curing insomnia.
There is just one type of speaker who can be successful by only accomplishing the first of our four speaking requirements-the standup comedian. Granted, he/she has the additional and incredibly difficult task of trying to make us laugh ever 12 seconds. But a comedian can be very successful without making us necessarily remember any jokes, take action, or tell other people about the jokes we hear. Hearing comedy is about getting a laugh that moment, nothing else.
